The winter wonderland at the beginning of the week after below freezing temps caused all kinds of problems transitioned to a warm start to 2023.

Showers tonight and Saturday will transition to partly sunny skies for New Year’s Day and temps up to 68 to open up 2023. The forecast calls for sunshine and temps up to 70 degrees on January 2, but look for rainfall to return and temps in the upper 60s for Tuesday, and temperatures starting to drop again to something more seasonal by week’s end.

Look for a chance that flash floods could happen in isolated thunderstorms for New Year’s Eve, and upward of a quarter of an inch of rainfall, based on NWS Peachtree City forecasting.

This all comes after a brutally cold Christmas that saw freezing temps invade the country and cause havoc in holiday travel. Here in Georgia, the arctic cold snap saw everything from patches of ice on roadways and burst pipes in homes in places here like Polk County.

Last Friday, the high was 18 degrees in Cedartown and this week was up to the mid-60s, a 50-degree swing in temperature in seven days. That came after a huge swing in the weather prior to the cold weather as well.

Look for temperatures to drop back down into the lower 50s as a high on by next Friday.
