A local firefighter was provided with the first-ever award given out in memory of County Commissioner Scotty Tillery during the department’s annual banquet ahead of the holiday season.
Captain Austin Temple was honored as the recipient of the first award in remembrance of the late County Commissioner, who was a longtime supporter of the department and helping out in the community.
Tillery’s family was on hand to give the Scotty Tillery Community Service Award to Temple during the annual banquet for the department’s awards ceremony on December 12.
“We are delighted to have been able to take a moment in the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season to celebrate the incredible men and women who serve our community so selflessly,” the county wrote on their website.
Temple joined a group of men and women honored for their service, including Assistant Chief Duane Lockhart who was honored with the Roy Anderson Leadership Award, Norval Knight Sr. honored with the Elaine Anderson EMA Volunteer Award, Captain Kevin Cook as Fire Officer of the Year, Steve Crook as Support Firefighter of the Year and Corey Morton as Recruit Firefighter of the Year.
Additionally, two members of the fire department were honored for 50 years of service to Polk County in roles throughout the volunteer-based organization. Station Chief Larry Swafford and Lt. Tim White were both recognized for continued service to Polk County residents.
Steve Gable was honored for 20 years of service; Capt. Michael Cochran and Tina Noles for 15 years of service; Mason Gore, Capt. Casey Jones and Chris Brown for 10 years of service and Lt. Keisha Cochran and Lt. David Baxter for 5 years with the department.
“We recognize that these people are valuable members of our department and recognize their service and time,” PCFR Chief Michael Hanuscin said.
