Former County Commissioner who passed to be remembered for trailhead help with monument, trail rename

Nature lovers and local officials alike will be joining alongside the family and friends of former Commissioner Scotty Tillery in honoring his memory at the Potts Hollow Trailhead in the weeks ahead.

Organizers moved a ceremony from last week to this coming Saturday, January 25 due to the weather to honor Tillery’s contributions to making the Potts Hollow Trailhead happen with a pair of remembrances of the longtime promoter of recreation and all things local in Polk County.

Tillery Trail (currently the Red Trail) will officially be renamed and a memorial marker for Tillery will be unveiled during the 10 a.m. ceremony. The public is invited to take part and show their support for the effort.

The Potts Hollow Trailhead was one of the final major projects Tillery spearheaded before his untimely passing from cancer on Jan. 1, 2024. His work with the help of the County Commission ensured that the construction of the trailhead would allow local residents and out of town visitors better access to the Pinhoti Trail’s stretch through the northwest corner of Polk.

Hikers, cyclists and even those looking for trails to ride on horseback are able to access the trails’ 340-mile length from end-to-end via the trailhead and also connect to other multi-use trails around the area.

Check back for more on the forthcoming ceremony later this month.
