Polk County’s numbers are going to end the year with another 32 new COVID-19 cases, a death and three more hospital patients to overall tallies added.
The Georgia Department of Public Health’s total case number for Polk stood at 2,570 positives, 44 deaths and 221 hospitalizations on December 31.
The final death of 2020 reported from the virus was that of a 83-year-old man with unknown co-morbidity factors. It brought the death toll to 11 for December to close out the month.

With the increase of new positives, the two-week average went up by another percentage point to 29.4%, and the overall percent of positives now sits at 14%. With those numbers in hand and the total number of positives, the number of tests administered sits at 18,357.
Along with the increase of new positives, antigen-positive cases went up again in the county per the afternoon report. It went up another 21 on the day to 865 to end the year.
The statewide numbers went up by a new record today, with 8,551 positive added to the state total as of year’s end of 566,676 cases in total. Another 3,539 antigen-positive cases were added as well, bringing that total to 99,776. That increased the overall percentage to 10.1% on the day.
Georgia’s number of new hospitalizations stood at 360, bringing the total at year’s end to 42,084 patients treated. An additional increase of new intensive care patients went up to 7,414 on the day.
Sadly, another 68 Georgians were reported to have died (including the death locally) to bring that figure to close out 2020 to 9,872.
The national death toll went up by another 3,764, up to 341,199 deaths reported since January 21. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention put the overall number of COVID cases at 19,663,976, up on the day by another 230,337.
