Events kick off with Earth Day in Rockmart, end with Thursday downtown party with free food and music

The City of Rockmart has a lot in store for Georgia Cities Week this year as they are “Lighting the Way” forward with events for the public to take part in, starting this Saturday and continuing through Thursday.

City officials will be out as part of Polk County’s Great American Cleanup contingent on Saturday, April 22 in Seaborn Jones Park at 8:30 a.m., and crews will be out gathering yard and household waste on city curbsides as well during the day.

At 10 a.m., the city will gather at the Skate Park at the corner of Hogue Avenue and Pearl Street to celebrate a belated Arbor Day on Earth Day this year with a tree planting ceremony as well.

The city is also encouraging folks who need to get rid of tires to join in the Tire Amnesty Day at Camp Antioch on Antioch Road from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. as part of an encouraged effort for Georgia Cities Week to cleanup Rockmart ahead of other fun this week.

On Monday evening, April 24, the city hopes you stretch out before coming out for the 2023 Rockmart Health Walk, starting at 5:30 p.m. The City will be hosting the walk starting at the Silver Comet Trailhead downtown at Seaborn Jones Park, and walkers will be encouraged to head out to the Nathan Dean Sports Complex and back for the event.

All participants will be registered to win door prizes. It is free to participate.

Additionally, the city is hosting an Open House for those interested in the recently-formed Rockmart Downtown Development Authority starting at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25.

The DDA is just one of the recent new tenants within what was City Hall at one time at 133 S. Marble St., but now is home to the Development Authority of Polk County, the Polk County Chamber of Commerce and the Rockmart History Museum and its collection.

Finally, downtown will play host on Thursday evening, April 27 starting at 6 p.m. for a free event being put on by the City of Rockmart to cap off the celebrations around Georgia Cities Week. Free food and door prizes will be given out (while supplies last) and Betting on the Mule will be playing downtown for the city’s “Celebrating Rockmart” event.

This year’s theme for Georgia Cities Week is “Lighting the Way.” The annual weeklong celebration of cities around the state is recognized in April and is promoted by the Georgia Municipal Association.
