A longtime City of Cedartown employee who passed away in April was provided with a proclamation celebrating her life and service to the community earlier in the week at the City Commission’s regular session on May 10.

The city posted the following to Facebook about the honors for Vurla Thornton, presented to her family on Monday evening:

The City of Cedartown issued a proclamation last night honoring Vurla Thornton. Mrs. Thornton, a 35-year employee of the City of Cedartown, passed away on April 22 and several members of her proud family attended the reading of the proclamation during Monday evening’s meeting.

The proclamation stated:

WHEREAS, Vurla Thornton dedicated 35 years to the City of Cedartown serving as an exceptional and very dedicated employee;

and WHEREAS, Ms. Thornton began her career in 1962 as a customer service, tax, and business license clerk until her promotion to an administrative assistant;

and WHEREAS, it was known that she was the “go to” by all her co-workers as she helped mentor them both on the job and in their personal lives;

and WHEREAS, Ms. Thornton was a devout Christian that taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and showed her Christian Faith wherever she went, leaving a line of believers as her legacy;

and WHEREAS, she lived a long fulfilling life for God, her family, friends, and especially her grandchildren;

and WHEREAS, it is an honor to recognize the legacy of 35 years of service and dedication to the City by Ms. Vurla Thornton.
