The Polk School District have decided two days of graduation are two too many, and a vote by the Board of Education late Tuesday afternoon made a change to consolidate ceremonies to one day a year.
Board members voted unanimously to change graduation for the Class of 2025 at Cedartown High School to a morning ceremony on Friday, May 23. This changes a longstanding pattern when CHS would hold their commencement for seniors on Saturday mornings following the final day of school and Rockmart High’s graduation on the Friday before Memorial Day.
The consolidation will separate the two schools ceremonies by 11 hours.
Cedartown High School’s Class of 2025 will begin their ceremony at 9 a.m., while Rockmart High will wait until 8 p.m. to hold their ceremony when May 23 hits next year.
The change for graduation meant two more items needed to be approved by the Board of Education as part of the consolidation plan: the last day of school, and what to do about the calendar for educators.
All three issues were handled within the same request before the board. Cedartown graduation being held on Friday morning means that school needs to end a day early per Superintendent Dr. Katie Thomas.
She requested and got approval for the final day of school to be set on May 22.
May 23 will now be a post-planning day for educators, and allow for faculty to participate in the graduation ceremonies.
No additional changes to the school calendar were made during the meeting.
The first day of school for the 2024-25 Academic calendar remains Thursday, August 8. Teachers will begin reporting for work on Monday, July 29.
Fall break this coming year will be October 4 through Oct. 7, Thanksgiving is Nov. 25 through Nov. 29, Christmas break will run from Dec. 22 through Dec. 31, the Winter Break begins on Valentines Day from February 14 through Feb. 17, and Spring Break is April 7 through 11, 2025 on the coming Academic Calendar.
